Default Surface Rust under the hood

Hey guys,

I was inspecting under the hood the other day and have found some surface rust. Is this likely to spread and if so what should I do to address this problem? The car is a 2008 with only 26k miles so I am a little worried. Cheers.

The rust pictured appears to show the frame was bent and pulled back. The paint fractures, opening the door for moisture.

Take it apart, wire wheel it throughly, and treat it with a product called POR15 (Paint Over Rust)

Park that thing in a lake for the next 50 years, the rust will never spread or return.

Thank you Billman for the quick reply, sounds like a complicated and tedious process. I'm likely to get this done through a garage, do you have an idea on how long or the costs of the process?
By take it apart, do you mean the frame? I've spoken briefly to my mechanic and he only talked about removing the intake and everything in front and wire wheel/ paint.

Correct, just remove the items that are in the way. Im sure a good satin black will work just fine if it’s prepped/primed.

I have used POR15 many, many times. Prep is critical. There is a multistep process as suggested by POR- just follow the directions on the website. Essentially wire wheel as much rust as possible, clean with metal prep cleaner, spray with the acid etch and let it work for 30 mins keeping it wet with the etch. Clean off with water. I use my heat gun to dry the area quickly. POR can supply all the stuff needed. I pick it up from our local Canadian Tire.

POR sticks to everything, including yourself. It takes about a week to wear off. Ask me how I know.

good luck.

Been using por15 for decades. Can't say enough good things about it.

Prep is indeed critical for this stuff, and it doesn't come off your skin until the skin sheds. If applied properly, its incredibly durable, amd indeed contains the worst possible rust.
