Default Tension rods in trunk causing creaking when opening/closing

It was quiet in my garage to I went poking around my new (to me) S2000. I noticed that when opening and closing the trunk the two tension rods (which I presume help the trunk automatically open), rub together to create this creaking sound. Is there any way to bend or adjust to rods so they don't contact?

do your rods stll have the rubber protectors on them ?. Mine use to make a similar noise when I got my car. I thought the bars were put on in reverse so I pulled them off and reattached them to match the picture I had of them in the shop manual. Pulling them off is not for the faint of heart, my dealer parts guy loaned me the proper tools to do them. I also re-adjusted the rubber protectors on them. There isn't much adjusting you can do with those, not sure bending will help.

One of the rods has a rubber sleeve on it, but it's very thin. I'm probably not going to go through the trouble of removing and re-installing the rods. I may head down to the hardware store to if it sells anything similar to the rubber sleeve that is already on there.
