Default Tip for dealing with caliper screws.

Before the nuclear option, ie drilling them out, put a jic #3 bit in an 8mm socket, and treat it like a bolt. If you can't remove it with a 1/2 ratchet then you may as well drill it out.

Use a Hammer Driver with a large Phillips bit. Works every time (hopefully your referring to the rotor screws).

That's what I use. Impact driver. Photo with spare screws.

If you use a 1/4" ratchet with a 1/4" spinner handle and PH/PZ bit (whichever fits the bolt perfectly), you can both apply inwards pressure towards the bolt and then rotational force using the ratchet. I find that applying inward pressure is much more effective and stable with the spinner handle versus trying to push down on a bare ratchet head directly.

Make a punch. The head of the punch should be the same size as the head of the screw. Round, squared off nice and flat.

Hold the punch dead center over the screw head, and shock it with a hammer, 3 times. You will literally break the taper, like a ball joint.

Now grab a regular philips screwdriver and see what happens.

You will never have to fight one ever again.

I'm sure you already know this... but for those who don't --- you need to press and twist the impact driver counterclockwise while hammering it --- to loosen the screw.

I have 3 Vessel Japanese "Philips" type screwdriver from large to small. They are also impact drivers but only move in one direction to loosen. I have other impact drivers with selectable points but that one is reversible. You want to be sure your driver is going in the correct direction; you don't want to be making it tighter when you need to remove it.

Right! You need to compress the top of the impact driver and twist it to the direction needed. Counterclock to loosen. Clock to tighten.

Video is worth a thousand words. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the lapping compound tip!
