Royal Purple sucks

I'm running Amsoil GL-4 75w-90 gear lube....shifts perfectly....Motul Gear 300 is also an option but the GL-5 rated fluids may represent a long term corrosion issue

Honda MTF is fine as long as you change it about every 5k miles
hi...what do u mean GL5's might have corrosion issues? you're getting me worried!

[QUOTE=slipstream444,Sep 7 2008, 07:01 PM] I spoke with Amsoil tech services regarding basically the same question.

Most (not all) GL-5 gear lubes contain extreme pressure, sulfur based additives which can, over time (and at elevated operating temps), corrode "yellow metals" (copper, brass, etc). Depending on the type of oil and the additive package, it may take an extended period of operation for any corrosion relatred issues (esp with regard to the synchros) to manifest themselves. When I talked to an Amsoil tech rep about their old "Series 2000" GL-5 gearbox and differential lube (which I ran for a few hundred miles, and the car shifted great), he said it would most likely be safe unless I'm operating > 200 F for an extended period of time. Most street driven transmissions never get that hot. However, to be safe, I decided to dump it and put in their GL-4 rated gearbox lube.

Motul claims "Gear 300" GL-5 oil is yellow metal safe (I'd like to see a lab test where they evaluate discoloration), but then again it's designed for racing, so chances are most of the people who use will never see 50,000 miles on their transmission, for example. I read about one (and only one) case where someone complained of synchro corrosion with Motul Gear 300, but it sounded like he used other products as well before trying the Gear 300. I think the Amsoil GL-4 referenced above is a good compromise because it's reportedly more shear stable than typical trans oils like Honda MTF and Redline. So far, I'm happy with it, in fact I just ordered a full case, I'm going to try it in my RX-7 as well.

[QUOTE=haywoodjablome,Sep 8 2008, 05:40 PM] The use of Amsoil is almost like a cult following.

I'm with ya, bro, slip and I had a little "debate" on Amsoil vs. Mobil 1 about a month ago, where I said basically the same thing, but the more I see UOAs for Amsoil products, the more I like the stuff...you can't deny it's a pretty darn good oil
This kind of stuff will always be a topic of great debate. Some people just get their panties up in a huge knot whenever their beloved Amsoil is spoken of in anything but the best light. These people must be officers in the cult or something.
As for it being a good oil, like you, I've admitted it and have never denied it. I clearly stated that I consider it a good oil. I don't dislike the oil itself. I just don't like the pricing of it or the way it's marketed. "Worth it" is in the users mind. It is my opinion (and I'm entitled to it) that Amsoil is overpriced and overkill for the recommended oil change interval of the S2000 and for what the oil is asked to do. This is particularly important during the warranty period. Your Honda warranty guy at the dealership won't give a crap if you're using the almightly Amsoil for 3 or 4 times the recommended change interval when something goes bust. He just needs an excuse to deny coverage and you just gave it to him.
When "good" is plenty good enough, twice or even 3 times as good is pointless (ie, OVERKILL).

I don't pay much attention to extended drain intervals, I'll keep changing mine at about 5k, but there is good evidence you can run it longer in many cases. Regardless, the quality of the oil is the key issue, why not use the best stuff you can get if it's competitively priced?

First of all - you took this post completely off subject. Second - it is more than obvious that your intent was NOT to contribite to the OP, but to bash Amsoil.
Once again: that type of content belongs in the discussion forum, not in the UTH forum.

To answer your off subject post:
Look - it's obvious you have some problem with Amsoil and the folks that choose to use the product. From what I understand, Canada is pretty much a free country and no one is telling you to use Amsoil. You have the freedom to choose not to use it. If you think Amsoil is too expensive and "overkill" (as you put it), save your money and don't put the "overkill" in your car. Amsoil is NOT the subject of this post. If you feel you need to rant about Amsoil - post your feelings in the discussion forum please.

Back to the original subject matter.
