I couldn't get my transmission to move back either the first I tried when I recently removed my transmission. I had not removed the driverside bolt along the top of the transmission bell housing after I had lowered the engine.

I would say the culprit is a hidden bolt somewhere

I agree check that you have loosened the upper starter bolt. If you have you will know how difficult it was to see. If you are 100% sure all the bots are out and the fork is pulled there is a notch to insert a very large screwdriver and seperate the flanges. Do you have any space or is it tight between the trans and the block?

Upper stater bolt might be the culprit. For me, the best way to reach it was by taking off the throttle body, belt tensioner and the alternater. It made it 1,000,000 times easier!

thanks for all the replys guys... i will be going out and checking your theories tomorrow after I get off of work... i am positive i pulled all the bolts that encircle the bell housing and hold the trans to the engine... i remember pulling the upper started bolt but now after reading all these posts that suggest how easy it is to mistake the upper for the lower i am suspicious that may well be my problem. there is no gap between the engine / trans right now... if i place a screwdriver in that lower notch and pry VERY SLIGHTLY I can make a 1/8th inch gap along the bottom and it feels as if the hang up is a bolt or blockage along the top side of where the engine and trans connect... would this be consistent with the upper started bolt not being removed? Thanks again for all the help!

And removed the drive shaft? Also, did you lower the engine?

I agree with ohhhdang, make sure you remove the driveshaft completely.
