Thank you for the info.

The one guy cdelena mentions upgraded bolts.. never heard of this.
You're welcome, happy to help.

The oil jet bolts that cdelena referred to attach the oil squirters on your block. They direct oil to the underside of the pistons to help with cooling and lubrication. Early engines (2000 through mid-2002) had the old version of the bolts. Due to problems experienced in Europe (engine failures) during extended high speed runs, the bolts were re-designed to improve flow. There was a recall issued on this in Europe, but never any official notification made in North America. Since I had a very early car that I used on the track, I did the bolt swap. The new bolts can be retro-fitted to an early engine by dropping the oil pan and carefully replacing them. The job requires some finesse. If you are getting a new early-version short block, it is easier to do with the engine out of the car. Newer engines already have the updated bolts. The bolts cost about $50 from Hardtopguy or H and A Accessories.

Here's a link to a description of the replacement procedure.

Yes, it really sucks that this happened to your engine. I hope that I don't run into the same problem when my car gets more miles on it.

Hmmm never heard of that. I have a 2000 and my VIN# is under 5000. So I do have one of the very early one's..... I'd have to leave my car at Honda and pay for a tear down to see what they would do. I suspect probably nothing since the age and mileage... I've already got a pretty much brand new short block replacement for very cheap. Still waiting to tear apart to see what the head looks like.

So I suspect you all dished out the $$$ to get a tear down to see what was up?

I'll keep you guys updated.

sweetj, I'm sorry to hear what happened. last year, bill did mention this, oil jet bolt, to me. I do have MY00 so I am worried time to time. It's in one of my "things to be done at bill's" list. like others mentioned, if new engine or block wasn't replaced, you might want to do it as a precaution. I hope you get your car back soon.

Shit. Now you have me worried. I'm at 95,2xx and I'm assuming I'll hit 100,000 sometime this year. I have about 450 track miles and about 4yrs worth of autocrosses. Guess I'll have to corss my fingers and hope for the best.

I have approx 5000 track miles on my original engine, plus 55000 street miles. Don't worry about what hasn't happened yet.

I had about 53k total miles, including 4,300 track miles on my MY2000 car (VIN 4074), and the engine worked fine even after I "retired" the car.

I think sweetj and my friend Scott had a defect in the engine, even though the Honda dealer won't admit to it. IMO, there is no reason that a properly lubricated engine should throw a rod.

Unless maybe it was over-revved? Not saying you did SweetJ, just asking if an over-rev could cause a thrown rod.
