Vtec didn't engage, hesitation in vtec, knocking?

Vtec didn't engage, hesitation in vtec, knocking?
Filled up at a shady looking shell, guy didn't tighten gas cap all the way (NJ ) and i forgot to tighten it when i got out.
Drove around town ~10 miles everything was fine...
Few hours later went driving at higher speeds in vtec and the felt a REALLY strong backlash when letting off the gas in vtec, second later it felt like it was missing a beat in vtec (is this knocking?).
1mi later my cel came on, pulled over and tightened gas cap. Now Vtec wouldn't engage and 6k felt like hitting a rev limiter, car wouldn't even hold idle.
Few hours later (and this morning) car feels like it's driving 100% but CEL is still on?
Could this all be because of the gas cap (unlikely since i've turned it on and off about 6 times now), map sensor, bad gas?
I'm pulling the code this afternoon if my buddy is around so i'll post that later, but TIA

If the gas cap was actually loose then the CEL is most likely because of that. The cel probably put your car in "limp mode" which will not allow vtec to be engaged.
Your car was not "knocking" if it is driving 100% again this morning. Knocking is usually referred as noise coming from a damaged bearing in the bottom end. That isn't your problem if it is driving ok now.
If it drives ok it's likely the cel will go away after a few drives. I would still have the codes checked just to be sure, though.
