I've said it before, but it's worth saying again. You don't have to worry about what temp the oil is at. There is no need to wait X minutes after you reach the magic "3 bars" (or equivalent on a 2.2L). The temp gauge leaves "2 bars" and lights up the "3rd bar" at approx. 75 degree C (give or take a couple). That's about 167 degree F. On even a cool spring day, this can take as little as 3 to 5 minutes of easy driving after a first, cold start. On the most part, after a cold start in most engines, the oil temp lags behind by maybe 20 to 30 degrees. Let's say that by the time we reach 167 degrees, the oil has achieved about 140 degrees. Did you know that that is just a little hotter than most people keep their hot water tanks set at in their homes?
If you take a jug of 10W30 oil and soak in the hottest water that comes out of your tap till it got to 140 degrees, do you actually think that the oil would be considered "cold" and have poor flow characteristics?
No, lads, Honda knew what they were doing when they pegged VTEC to activate at "3 bars". Waiting any longer before you "rip on it" won't be any healthier for your engine. However, if you're one of those people who sit on their driveway waiting for 3 bars so you can VTEC out of your neighborhood, well, the back part of your tranny, your propshaft, your rear diff, your CV joints and rear wheels, hub and tires will hate you and probably die a premature death.

Perhaps i didnt make myself totally clear with every1... i do not start the car, wait for the 3 bars, and then drive, no no... i start, wait about 20 secs, head out on the road, drive her easy until the temp gauge reaches 3 bars, then if and when i want i'll VTEC her... i agree its not necessary to idle until 3 bars show in your driveway b4 u go...

Different country's => different manuals.

My manual states "If the outside temp is below freezing OR if the car hasn't been driven for a couple of days THEN warm it up for a couple of minutes.
Then between () AGAINST THE LAW IN GERMANY!
I have a German manual because the car was imported into Holland.

So I guess when the conditions above aren't met you are allowed to start & drive.
Btw... I could not find any mention of the "moron rev limiter".
so what is against the law in Germany? from reading it, it sounds like its against the law to warm up ur car but that doesnt sound right lol. correct me if im wrong

I think it has something to do with unnecessary idling - pollution and waste of fuel. It's got nothing to do with "warming up" a car.

I'm loving this thread-we are seeing what S2KI members' starting up rituals and VTEC pre-checks are.
Personally-I just like to wait 'till the revs come down before I leave the driveway. I think like Wisconsin said, its based on the the coolant temp sensor...and thats when the fuel/revs come down. Thankfully, I'm rarely in a hurry when I take the S out of the garage. Its just something I grew up with-"Let the car warm up" and I even do it with Mobil 1 in there. Oh well-we all have our "rituals" and we all kow that S2K owners have a lot of them.

Probably less than I can afford but way more than I care to spend.

Wisconsins2k once said something about the oil protecting the best when it is up to optimal temperature which is more than 140 degree's.

By the way, I dun't idle in my driveway for more than one minute. I warm up my engine and the rest of the drivetrain by gently driving my car. Once the third bar shows up on my gauge, I continue to drive semi-aggressively to further warm the transmission, differential and engine oil.

Right when the third bar shows on the temperature gauge, the oil temperature is about 127 degree's. It has been documented that the normal optimal oil temperature for the Honda S2000 is 176 degree's.

To each his own
