Default weird noise at ~2100 rpms

Hey yall,

I think the problem may be timing chain tensioner, or maybe one of the serpentine belt tensioners?

My car (MY00, 75k miles) has been making a noise at ~2100 for a while...it happens whether or not I am in gear. I was changing the oil/tranny/diff fluid this weekend, and decided to investigate.

Using a stethoscope, the noise (which sounds like rattling or something? a tensioner that is off-balance?), seems to be coming from the pulley on the top left of engine. I'm not sure if it has another name or not...

Do yall have any ideas? That's not the timing chain tensioner is it?

Thanks!

I can try, I only have my cell phone, no camera or camcorder. It sounds like a whirring noise with metal grating on metal.

I'll try to record a video tonight.

Do a search for the chain tensioner to hear examples of what that sounds like. It has been described as sounding like a playing card flapping against the spokes of a bicycle wheel.

Good luck.

the timing chain tensioner and belt tensioner are two very different things. I can't remember which pulley is the idler pulley but it could be that too. I'll have to look under the hood later.

I think what you listened to is after the TCT was replace, so that guy had some other problem.

After listening again I would describe the sound more as a "diesel" sound.
