Knowing what I know now - I'd probably go the route you just mentioned, and feel good about it. The semi-synthetic was an unnecessary step.
Make sure you stay on top of your car's consumption rate during the first 3,000 miles - don't let it get low! Some cars consume a lot in the first few thousand miles. Check with your warranty to make sure your intentions and/or actions won't cause you pain down the road.
Amsoil 5W30 will work great for you.
