What could cause a CEL to come and go?

Last night my CEL came on as I slowed down for a U-turn. I figured I would go by an Autozone to have the code checked today. The CEL was still on this morning when I left the house. However, I sat at a long stop light, and when it turned green and I hit the gas pedal, the CEL turned off. I thought the CEL was supposed to stay on until it is cleared. If this is going to be an intermittent thing, that is gonna suck.

Anyone know if old codes can be retrieved?

I believe the PCM DOES store a "soft" code. Possibly the problem cured itself, meaning does not exsist anymore. Misfires(low gas esp on turns can suck up air instead of fuel can poss cause the cel) can "cure" itself. I believe the PCM needs a few complete driving cycles to do so... Maybe during the PCM's self check, it detected the problem no longer exsists so, it shut off..

Ooops... I forgot, the PCM does the same thing to store a code also... I think the tester at Autozone can still read history codes and stuff.. so have them check it out. I'm very curious to see what code you had...

Interesting dilema Gernby old boy? You can recover the code with either OBD-II Explorer Software or a Honda PGM Scan Tester. While it is true OBD-II has a soft code system, that system is usually transparent until a hard code is set. Odd you had a code appear and disappear? I'll have to research this one....but it is not normal. Are you sure it was not a MIL light? How's the oil level?

Doubt this was your problem, but if you remember, I had a CEL a few weeks ago and didnt find the problem until i had to get gas. I guess i didnt get all 3 clicks the time before.

You still pull your ECU fuse as often as you used to?

I'm pretty conscious about how tight my gas cap is, and my ECU backup fuse is in. I haven't reset the ECU in quite a while. I did check the oil about a week ago, but I guess I should check it again. It definitely was not a MIL.
