Default what oil

i have been looking round this forum for a couple of days now trying to find some oil for my engine oil change, i came across a threat that recomended 10w30w, since then i have spoke with the guys from honda and the guy from parts said 5w30, so any way i gave him a list of what i needed and he calls me back and actualy says i need 0w30w for my engine oil change? can someone please tell me which oil is best to use, i also found that neo synthetic is best for the tranny and mobil1 75w90w synthetic gear oil for the diff, what do you guys think? also changing air filter and oil filter, open to recomendation on the filters, a link or a site would be greatly appricated to find out were you guys buy all your lubricants etc from.

thanks guys keep up the good work

There's a thread at the top called "Oil Journals"

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=195574

It has all the information you'll ever need to know about any type of fluids for our cars. Theres also alot of uesful informaitn in the FAQ (also at the top) that has all the do-it-yourself maintenance and which products to use.

For engine oil: Use any quality 10w30 oil. Conventional or sythetic is fine.
Oil Filter: Honda OEM (make sure its the PCX filter..its a little larger than the regular filters used for all other hondas except S2000s)
Transmission oil: Use Honda MTF
Diff Oil: Mobil 1 75w90 or LE607

Welcome to the boards by the way.

As S2KenC says, check out the Oil Journals.

Honda specifies 10W30, however 5W-30 and 0W-30 are excellent alternatives. They all have the same viscosity at operating temps, but 5W- and 0W- have lower viscosity (thinner) when the engine is cold, giving you faster startup oil pressure (0W-30 is the thinnest, but still much thicker than operating temperature viscosity). This is especially beneficial in the winter months in cooler climates.

The downside: To get the lower viscosity at cold temps, the oil uses "Viscosity Index Improvers" which over time can shear down, making your oil thinner at operating temps. I won't go into the details, but let's just say that this is a concern.

High quality synthetic oils tend to have very stable VI Improvers which don't easily shear down. I use Amsoil 0W-30 and my last Used Oil Analysis showed that the oil viscosity after about 12,000 miles was almost identical to its original viscosity, so I personally am not concerned. And if you do regular oil changes, this will not likely be a problem regardless of which brand of oil you use.

In the US, we usually buying most fluids from autopart stores when they are on sale for a lot less than regular price. Something like Mobil1 75w90 gear oil is rarely on sale so that I bought it from Walmart store. Honda MTF is only available at Honda dealer.

If you post your questions in UK S2000 owners sub-forum, you will get better responds from where to get all fluids for less money in Liverpool.

Actually it's the other way around. The VI's are added to increase the viscosity. A 0w-30 motor oil is a base stock of 0w with additives, detergent's and VI's to increase viscosity at operating temperature.

Mobil 1 5w-30 year round for me yo.

Good summary of most of all the stuff, but do you have a summary of recommended intervals to change the tranny and diff oils?

Thanks,
Allen
