what is this?

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j141/sho...es/IMG_0610.jpg

I was looking at an S2000 on a trailer and noticed what I believe to be a pre-silencer. I had a 350Z before and it had one of those. If this is a presilencer, has anyone removed it and welded a straight pipe in its place?

I did this on my Z and it increased the sound volume drastically in higher RPMs, while maintaining stock volume under 4,000 rpm. Anyone done this? Reactions?

PS- the pipe closer to the engine with the O2 sensor is the cat, right? I was under the impression that we had more than one?

thanks

resonator

do a search and you will find threads about people doing this for sound reasons.

Exactly. There are many threads discussing it. I had mine done for a while before I went with a Fujitsubo. A nice, subtle increase in depth and slightly louder/deeper overall tone. It's not dramatic but for some, it's enough to keep them from wanting to buy a complete exhaust. Best part is that if you make a few calls, you can find a shop that will cut it out and weld in a straight pipe for $40-$50.

some people complain their stock exhaust is too raspy with the resonator (and cat?) removed.

I thought the Helmholtz resonator was the pipe that sticks out at a 90 degree angle between the silencer that is circled and the catalytic convertor.
