Default What is the purpose of the metal plates hiding/covering the softtop motors?

Just out of curiosity, what is the point of the metal plates/gussets that cover the soft top motors? They don't need to be there as when the interior plastic trim is in, those cover/protect the motors...

Perhaps an engineer or rather even a logical/mechanically inclined can explain the purpose of these?
