probably aem as it is a plug and play, or you can piggy back different ecu's such as the autronic, motec, and whatever else is out there...

AEM EMS or you can piggy back Apexi VAFCII
These are the most used and have the best rep. for getting the job done
AEM is about $1,500 + tune and will do it all and the VAFCII is about $300 + tune and will do air fuel and will adjust VTEC engagement.
Tune on the AEM can range from $500 + Tune on the VAFCII is about $120 average with dyno.

how far will they allow the vtec engagement to be lowered? Or better said, what is the best rpm to have vtec kick in? 5400 rpm?

Autronic and Motec are not piggy back systems, they are full stand alones eliminating the stock engine management.

If you wanted, you could have VTEC on at idle with the AEM. The best RPM is the one that makes the most power. That is 100% dependent on your setup.

The AEM is the best plug and play IMO.
I don't really like piggybacks.
Other standalones are very good, but if you have to ask, they're probably not for you.

do more research about Stand alone systems,

Also, the Greddy Ultimate E-manage is a VERY nice tuning tool, I have been tuning mine and have had nothing but success. for my mild N/A set-up its great. the AEM EMS would be overkill IMO for my set-up

good luck

I completely agree with you. Going to a full stand alone system such as AEM for mild to moderate bolt on modifications is a bit overkill, unless you wanting to extract that little bit of extra power out of your setup. I have had very good results with Greddy E-manage and previously sold my SRT-4 that put down 409WHP and 388FT LB TQ with the DTEC fuel controller. I am not whoring that system, but it has to be one of the easiest and most bang for the buck tuning systems before going full standalone.

When we break down a full stand alone system compared to a piggy back we are taking 1 system that completely feeds a genuine signal to control fuel, air, and timing, compared to a piggy back system which simply takes in 1 reading and changes the output reading fooling the stock ECU to read different amounts of info. I guess you could almost say that a piggy back system is an adjustable voltage clamps of sorts, with the extra program adjustments done by an easy user interface.

except that when you use autronic or the motec as a full standalone your dash doesnt work. been there done that. so you have to piggy back (sortof) off of the stock ecu to be able to use the stock dash, otherwise you have very expensive dash options to choose from.
