I've often wondered if it would be possible to have the mouth of a Aus/Spoon snorkel way bigger I.E the width of the grille? I know Mugen with all their development have not done this but would it make sense- more air flowing etc.
I run a 4IG intake but wish now to reduce the sound so I can hear the exhaust.
The engine takes in as much air as it needs. I do not think the existing airbox is restrictive as far as CFM is concerned, based on the volumetric requirements of a 2L engine spinning at 9K. You could make an air system the size of Great Britain and not produce an ounce more of power. The systems that seem to work do so by keeping the air charge cool, reducing the tendency of the ECM to pull spark advance. As long as the snorkel flows as much air as the engine can take (which I believe it does), I think we are grasping at straws. It's l;ike those clapped out Accords with bigger and bigger exhaust pipes - they make zero power beyond a certain point. It's like in quantum physics - zero crossing points and such.
I would bet you that this losermobile started on the bigger is better and got caught up in it:
The Mugen design is as much about getting the airflow to the airbox section round the filter as smoothly as possible, as it is maximising flow. It's already compromised by having to change section so quickly from the square section that passes over the radiator. Now the 'Spoon' ducts are narrower here, but are feeding into the end of the airbox, so there's much the duct can do about the change there anyway.
There is a 'Spoon' type intake that fits the stock airbox, but is a little larger. J's Racing does one, as well as their 'Mugen' type airbox. But I doubt it offers any advantage over a normal 'Spoon' type duct.
One more interesting prospect is the modification done on the newer Spoon race car. I've some pictures on paper, but not scanned in yet. They've built a short aluminium duct that takes air from the same area by the air guide as the Mugen airbox. That kind of approach might offer a small improvement over a normal 'Spoon' type duct.

I found this on a site called World's Ugliest Cars. What is that pipe - a sewer main? What do you think it weighs? What does it sound like.
Of course, maybe he has a honin 426 Hemi up front (but based on the wheels, i doubt it - the strain on those wheel bearings is obvious - it is a matter of cruelty to small creatures).
scan those pics of the spoon race car ASAP..i would like to see what the setup is for the intake...so do they use their own air duct for racing or do they use the mugen?? also where can we find that look alike spoon air duct but in the larger version??
i think the best bet if u want to keep the stock air box is do that that "air box mod" by cutting away the wall in front of the air filter and that L-shaped part on the underside of the cover...do that with a nice air filter and the spoon air duct would b nice...maybe even a larger TB and the hondata manifold gasket

This is one of those asked and answered a zillion times questions that beg for the Search function, but here is a synopsis:
Stock: Excellent air flow and excellent filtration; zero maintenance hassle
Gauze filters: Slightly better air flow and worse filtration; minor maint hassle
Foam filters: Possibly better air flow, OK filtration, hassle to maintain
So, are a few ponies worth having more wear particles in the oil? Depends on your priorities, whether you are buy vs lease, change your oil every week, every HP counts vs. I don't want to replace my engine 1 mile sooner than necessary, etc.
