WILL SOMEONE CLEAR THIS UP PLEASE?
I had an inquiry earlier about a possible rear diff whine/transmission noise/wheel bearing whine. I cannot tell where the noise is coming from exactly because it echoes in the cabin.
NOISE DESCRIPTION:
The whining noise occurs when the car is in motion, whether in gear or not and gets louder and higher pitched at higher speeds.
I understand there was a TSB on a axle nut for earlier AP1's, so I have recently been checking my wheel hubs for excess heat; indicating a bad wheel bearing. They all feel the same, and none are warm in particular after upwards of 45 mins of driving.
IS IT NORMAL??
At a local S2000 meet, I asked a friend (AP2 owner) about this noise. He said that it is fairly normal, coming from the transmission. I have also read several mixed reviews on posts where owners claim they experience NO noise whatsoever.
Will someone please clear this issue up?
-What noises (if any) are common with AP1's (mine is 01)
-What could this "whining noise be"
-Has anyone experienced these problems and had them serviced?
THANKS

There are a ton of threads describing gear whine. Following a logical troubleshooting from what you have mentioned, since the whine continues even when the car is out of gear, this rules out your transmission because that stops spinning when you disengage the clutch.
The hub nuts give you a clicking noise.
The cv joints give a car vibration at around 3-5k rpm when excellerating.
So you probably have rear differenial whine. It's semi common probably more annoying than imminent failure. If the previous owners didn't bother to fix it under warranty, you are probably out of luck. If you are a good negotiator, you might get hondacare to goodwill it but you have to be persistant/catch someone in a giving mood.
Have you changed out your diff fluid? That is probably a good start, then go the soundproofing route, or buy a 4.57 pumpkin from Ricks.
