Zero cost is pretty close to cheap.

Please give us some App names. I can only find Apps that let the iPhone act like a walkie talkie to another iPhone.

I use Two Way from Apple’s apps store.

You’re right, Dave…It does require the person(s) you wish to communicate with to have the app, too. It works on an iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry and a PC. Two Way takes only seconds to install and has a selectable transmission and receiving area with a considerable range. Most all of us have a cell phone, but not a radio, right?

Au contraire. Most (if not all) of us who regularly go on organized drives have radios as our primary means of communications between each other. I have a spare one you can borrow in Durango.

You’re right, Gene. After all, we are the Vintage Group.

Yes! Bring the spare radio…I’ll probably need it unless a can convince at fifty others to download the app.

Two Way hasn't been updated since 2014. Not sure about channel selection (?) or if it exists. (in my 2 minutes of playing, other than being free, I really didn't see any benefit). It does have a map with communications areas but unless you're in those specific areas, I'm not sure if there would be any communication availability (unless you have people who also have the app but I have no way of discerning that).

2014 must have been a good year because my Two Way app works great. I’ve had voice communications with my family nearly twenty miles away. Will a hand held radio transmit/receive at that distance? I don’t know.

Two Way has has thousands of channels available, but none relate to the RF channels on a pocket radio. With Two Way just have the group sync the channel number and Voilà!!! …You can communicate.

We used Zello which is availabel for both iPhone and Android. It works well as a two-way radio, as long as you have cell phone coverage where you are driving. It works much better that the portable radios, IMHO. Zello can work for 50 miles or more, as we tested it at the end of a long drive one day, once we were back near the city. When we went into areas without cell phone coverage, the drive leader had rented Motorla radios, NOT FRS! I don't know what the cost was to him, but it seemed pretty reasonalbe. These were similar to those used in industrial plants or large complexes.

[/quote]Thanks Gary, that was something I obviously couldn't test. The closest service that I could relate this to would be the Nextel two way communications system. The update information was just that, information. Long times between updates (or no updates) usually means the author has stopped supporting the app or is no longer trying to improve it.
