2018 Baseball Play-offs
Now with a bit of rest and some perspective, I can say that the 18 inning game was more than one for the record books. The performance of both teams was baseball at its highest level. Nothing is perfect, and errors were made. But both teams capitalized on those errors, as they should. The Red Sox ended the game without a single bench player eligible to enter the game. Nunez had to play with at lest two injuries because there was no one left to send in. Eovoldi came in for the 12th inning. It looked like it would be all over in the 13th inning, but a throwing error allowed the Dodgers to tie things up. So Eovaldi stayed in the game. And he pitched till the 18th when he gave up the game ending home run to Max Muncy. The Red Sox had squandered his six inning effort, giving him no further run support.
But the bull pen was saved for another day. And last night, number five starter Eduardo Rodriguez gave the Sox fiver innings of excellent shut-out pitching, only to be left in the game a bit too long. In the sixth inning, with bases loaded and one out, Dodgers' Cody Bellinger hits into what should have been a double play, but after tagging home plate to force out Hernandez, Red Sox catcher Christian Vasquez makes a poor throw to first, hitting Bellinger in the back. He was safe at first and the Dodgers scored a run. The next Dodger, Puig, cleared the bases and Sox were down 4-0 and Eduardo was don for the night at least one batter too late. But the bull pen came to the rescue and held the Dodgers scoreless until the bottom of the ninth while the Sox bats finally came to life and put 8 runs up. Dodgers got back two in the bottom of the ninth, but Kimbrel, who looked shaky, was plenty good enough to get three outs without giving up the lead. In post game interviews, the players all commented about how they were inspired by Eovoldi's six inning performance the night before. So while he may have lost game three, it seems he was the inspiration to win game four
Red Sox are up 3-1 in the series. Game 4 tonight. Go Sox!!
