The Computer Corner
Ok, now here is a real challange! I'm barely capable of getting on line and posting on this site. All the terms that are used here are confusing, so if you decide to help remember you are dealing with a computer idiot
.
My wife got me a digital camera for Christmas (early), and I would like to be able to post pictures on this site or e-mail them to others.
If you start to ask me questions about my computer, remember that you are still dealing with an idiot here. I'll try and answer as best as possible, or research the question before I can answer

.This is really a very easy thing to do. First you have to answer a few questions.
1. Which camera do you have?
2. Have you been able to upload the photos from the camera to the computer?
Answer those and we'll proceed to the next step.
Rob,
1. The camera is a Sony (Cyber-shot) Model # DSC-W1.
2. No, I haven't tried this yet. From what I have read in the instructions it sounds like I have to hook up a USB cable from the camera to the computer. It is compatable with Windows XP (Home edition) which I have.
Thanks for offering the help, as I have been reading the instructions from the camera some of this stuff gets rather confusing

Excellent. I have a Sony too, and Windows XP makes it very easy. First lets get the photos into the computer.
1. Turn on the computer
2. Plug the cable into the computer (one of the USB ports)
3. Plug the other end of the cable into the camera.
4. Turn the camera on. Within a few moments the computer should recognize the camera. In a short period you should get the message that new hardware has been found an is ready to use.
5. From the computer's desktop (the main screen were all of the icons are) find My Computer and double click on it. If the My Computer icon is not on the desktop, click on "Start" and My Computer should be somewhere on the right side of the menu box that opens.
6. Once you are in My Computer find the icon that represents your camera. Most likely it will say "Sony memory stick" or something like that. I will have a drive letter (for example (E
) that is after the last letter you are used to seeing.
7. Double click on the camera icon. Double click on the icons that open (one might say something like DSC) until you open the folder with your photos.
8. Once you have that folder open click on "View" on the command line at the top of the screen, and click on select all (all of the photo icons should get highlighter). Click on "View" again, and this time click on copy.
9. Click on "Start" and "My Documents". Double click on "My Pictures" to open it. Once the folder "My Pictures" is open, put your cursor in it and right click. Click on "Paste" in the menu box that open. This will copy your photos from the camera to the computer.
There are other ways to do this too, but this is the simplest. Try this step and we'll continue after you get the photos onto the computer.

The other thing you may want to try is buying a USB reader, something like this:

You just plug the media in (that particular one can accept 8 different types of media - SDRAM, Compact Flash, etc) and it looks like just another hard disk to your pc. I find this the easiest way to get the pics from my camera to the pc. It is also much faster.
That one is from Best Buy and is $40 US.

Rob,
Got to #8 and then got stuck
. When I click on View there is no "select all" to choose. This is where I am, could see the pics on the computer but can't save them yet.
matrix, thanks for that tip also

My fault. It should have said, "In number 8 click on "Edit" and "Select all" and then click on "Edit" and "Copy""
Sorry for the error.
The card reader that Marco suggested is a very good device. I have it too. Well worth buying.
