EARL
Current threat level shows your area as Low. Outer Banks and Cape Code are High. Good luck, LB!! My niece and her hubby are driving up from New Bern on Fri, but I'm hoping that the storm will have moved North by the time they leave. And the route is inland.

We're not concerned here in South Florida...
I'm spending a week in Key West and I thoroughly expected this hurricane to head directly at me. I'm not sorry my pessimism was misplaced.

That won't matter in the least to the local "news reporters" who'll insist upon talking about it ad nauseum anyway.
They will constantly rehash every hurricane for the past 50 years and on and on and on. Blechh. I just watch the reports that come out of my county. We made our plan before we even moved here. I'm sticking to it.

Most of the time no one is concerned about a hurricane unless you're in the "watch" zone...

The surfers here are going nuts since we had a relatively calm summer and not much wave action. 10-12 footers are forecast for Friday with heavy rain but Saturday will actually be better with clear but windy weather and the ocean conditions will be ideal with some nice rollers. "Surfs Up".
I heard an amusing piece on NPR this afternoon: they've ordered evacuations on the Outer Banks, and one person, who was headed home to Alexandria, VA, was bitching that "well this had better be a real big storm and not go somewhere else to justify all the hassle of our getting sent home..."
This about sums up the American Public's attitude about such things: my little life is soooo much more important that what happens in the world that it better be good.
After all, with all the driving home and all, someone might miss the latest TV show about the big, new celebrity scandal. Sheesh. HPH

I bought new flashlights. I'm ready.
There is always a buzz of activity when a storm, any storm is predicted.
I stopped at the gas station. I was planning to gas up my Jeep today, it was down below 1/4 tank. The gas station was rather busy for a Wednesday evening, then I remembered, Earl! Folks want to be sure they have a full tank in the event the power goes out.
After one hurricane, I think it was Bob, we were without power for a few days. It gets real old in a hurry.
Without power we are better off than many. We do not have a well, so we have running water and can flush the toilet. (unless the city water supply is disrupted) We have natural gas coming into the house, so we can light the top burners on the stove with a match and cook. AND, most important, we have hot water so I can shower. I hate it if I can't blow dry my hair, but that's just being really prissy.
