The older I get the more I wonder about how well I'm qualified to pass judgment on a generation that has grown up in a world that is very different from the one I knew as a teenager and 20-soomething.

Lord knows this generation has to cope with a culture that has become has been almost totally corrupted by money and is largely bankrupt of values. And they will inherit a monumental set of problems that our generation is leaving behind. So I try not to be too critical. They may very well surprise us all.

There's a wonderful book called "Reviving Ophelia- Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls" by Mary Pipher. It really touches on how much the world has changed since we were teens, and all the pressures it puts on kids today, particularly girls.

It was hugely helpful for me in understanding what teenagers have to face out there every day.

With the world we've given them, it's amazing they have any faith or motivation at all.

It can't be that you've given up on the future. It can't be that you truly believe that there are no more dreams to dream or goals to meet. Do you really believe that we are at the end of the benefits of technology and research? Do you really believe that the human condition will not continue to get better? Do you really believe that all progress ended with our generation?

Did we get that old that fast? Have we given up that easily?
