I don't do enough travel to justify spending more than $300, so I am leaning towards the C-330 that a couple of you recommend.

What if any attachments, x-tra memory card, etc. do you suggest?

Val, I'm puzzeled by big bold letters that appear on many of Garmin GPS listed at the site you linked. It reads WHITE BOX OEM IS A LIE. Are they acknowledging that they mislead customers earlier? Are they saying these are rebuilt units? Call me stupid but I don't get what they are saying? Any ideas?

And finally a general question about waiting until after Christmas... is there any evidence to support that the prices really will drop. I know I thought that would happen on some electronic items in the past only to get a big surprise - they actually stayed the same or went up. Sellers know that a lot of people have cash to spend after Christmas and with early tax refunds.
Dave, I'm not sure you need memory cards for that unit? Others can chime in.

That's the one Legal Bill has. As far as I know it's out of the box ready without having to load any maps into it which was why Legal Bill went with that Model.

The Nuvi that I have is ready to go, with Maps of USA and Canada.

I believe that is correct. The C-330 is ready to go. Valentine and Matt both have that one.

I just purchased the following:

Nuvi 660
GA 27C low profile antenna
2 GB SD memory card
I'm a bit behind the times and have always had the pleasure of a paper map.......so tell me how the 660 works? Obviously you need the "unit. You need the memory card to store the maps. You need an antenna for_____?

There are so many out there. The Garmin Nuvi 350 we have is out of the box ready to go. No memory cards. You can buy upgrades if you travel overseas, or if you want to be notified of traffic issues. Neither of those things is important to us.

I know some folks send the route from the GPS to the computer, to print up, etc. I think that's the way Jim/Pas2knut did it for the Nor'Easter drive. The Nuvi I have does not do that. We will still travel with paper maps, but I think we can leave most of the paper behind.

I just ordered a Garmin Street Pilot C340 for $377 delivered from www.buyeretail.com. I'll be making a run to Radio Shack to get that splitter when the unit arrives. Thanks for all the information guys and gals!

I just looked at that site a few minutes after your post and they don't have it listed........ you must have got the last one.

I also did a little more research on the C330 which is available from numerous places for about $310. Unreal considering on a report done Jan '05 it was listed at $899 if preloaded with US maps; $200 less if you loaded them. 2/3rds price drop in two yrs. Worth the wait.

I think you would use the memory cards to load your mp3's and pictures if the unit is capable of playing or showing them.

I'm new to the portable units myself.

The Navi in our Civic Si has an antenna to get the signal from the satellite to tell you where you are. The 660 has a built-in and the external is there to enhance reception.

Rob? Is that about it?

The Navi in the Si also has "dead reckoning" in that it uses the transmission speed and the steering to stay on track even when communication with the satelite is lost. I have found that the built in Navi in the Si (I don't know about any other auto company's version as I'm not familiar with them) is far superior to any portable navi that I've ever seen.

All of the portable GPS units have built in antenna's but I've found that with my 2620 the reception becomes questionable when I drive down tree lined roads, on very cloudy days, or in urban areas like New York, Newark or Philadelphia. Adding the external antenna has made all of the difference in the world. I can now use the 2620 almost anywhere and not lose the signal. I have found that the external antenna has made such a difference that I bought a second one so that I could wire one into my S and leave one in Liz's car and not move it back and forth when I move the unit.

In essence, it transformed the unit from being unusable in the city to working perfectly.
