My super-auto is beginning to fail so today I ordered a new one. Wholelattelove is offering 20% off its already discounted machines plus extra warranty so I ordered another Gaggia. This time I ordered a Gaggia Synchrony Logic which is almost the same as the one I currently have (two boilers, high temps and fully automatic). I'll have a dial control for the length of the shot instead of the programmed buttons I currently have, but the price is super low. I love my Gaggia and it has been fantastic, but it is beginning to whine and I believe the pump is wearing out and the water temp is not as hot indicating a failure in the heating unit.
I'm thinking I may get it rebuilt and use it as backup. Jim is all for it -- he knows what its like when I don't have my espresso in the a.m.
You'll have to let me know how you like it. Our has already been rebuilt once. When it goes again, we'll be in the market, and you've always spoken well of the Gaggia machines.
Wow, I've been looking at the Rancilio Sylvia. How's the Gaggia?
I love it, Zippy. My Gaggia Synchrony Compact has reallllllly been a good machine. It is just getting old and worn out. The only problem I've ever had with it since I bought it in 2004 is that one time I accidentally dropped the water screen into the disposal and oooops turned on the disposal. Wholelattelove shipped a new one by fedex (surprisingly enough for shipping charges only). I turn the thing on in the morning and it stays on until evening and a fresh hot espresso is available at the touch of a button any time I want it. Once we went on vacation and were gone a week and I accidentally left it on (I would NOT recommend doing that). I've read a lot of reviews and occasionally there's a dissatisfied person who gives it poor ratings, but all in all it is a good performer imho.
I like the superauto since I only drink espresso or long shots (crema coffee) and never drink regular coffee. I no longer even own a coffeemaker. Lattes and cappuccinos are quite easy to make and for a treat now and then I whip one of those up. I think the Silvia requires a really good grinder and unless you already have one, the two together can get a little pricey. I like having everything in one package, but true espresso lovers think I'm a heathen for going the automatic route. I went through four or five manual machines before I finally bit the bullet and went with the Gaggia. I've never looked back. It consistently pours a really good shot and once its programmed you always know what you're going to get.
Herman had a Saeco Vienna (I believe) and he liked that. I wonder if he's still got it. does this mean I need to do a HEY HERMAN thread?
Val, are you a pure espresso drinker, or do you like to make crema coffee? I think I'd simply make a better cup of coffee with this machine, with the occasional latte thrown in.
