Considering that liberals dominate the teachers union and most major colleges and universities faculties, it's no wonder these tests seem so hard.

It's in their best interests, not the students, to teach "for the test". That is self evident that administrations throughout the school districts not only tolerate it but encourage it. Something is really wrong.

Kids can't count change. They have no concept of history, civics geography etc.
And the school teachers blame the tests?

"I can't educate them I have to teach them the test" should be grounds for a complete review and possible removal of a teacher. A test is used to indicate the level of knowledge that you've been taught.

This is how far the extreme left has infiltrated our educational system. Hopefully, the seeds planted in the next few years of conservative government, with an eye to improving rather than leveling our public education standards, will take hold and your grandchildren will be able to read cypher and write.

OK, so just leave things as they are? I didn't hear anyone in this thread stating that teachers didn't deserve to be rewarded or paid more. My mother was a teacher, my father was a teacher at one point, my sister is a teacher. Teachers definitely need to be paid more. I don't think there's a problem with merit pay...just with the system they have to base it on at this point. Of course the system needs reform....it has for quite a LOOOOONNNNGGGG time.

And I'm quite sure you're right - the Republicans want to do away entirely with public schools and education for all and make sure that education is only for the wealthy....

Maybe this topic needs its own thread before this thread ceases to be fun.

And Morris - if kids fail, they certainly need to be failed! Maybe if a parent gets pissed enough because his progeny is in the fourth grade for the third year, he'll get off his ass and actually make an effort to identify the problem and work with the teachers on a solution.
josey,

Why do you always live in a lifeboat? Why is it if someone objects to a policy that the answer is "OK, so just leave things like they are?". Just because someone has a different opinion or perhaps a different method doesn't mean that they don't want to change or improve things. It just means that they see things differently than you. And just maybe they are right and you are wrong.

That said, I for one don't think that increasing teacher's pay is the answer. Certainly, not by itself. All you are doing is throwing money at the problem, but not solving the problem. Get rid of the bad teachers (and there are plenty of them), get rid of the disruptive students, get rid of the politics, focus the schools on learning not test taking and get the parents involved and you'll accomplish something. With all due respect, a lot of those teachers that we all think so highly of had a hand in creating the system that we have. Maybe we should also give them their share of the blame.

Because it's a lot more comfortable to have solutions to offer than to watch people drown? Because it's nicer to live in a lifeboat than to drown in the ocean? Because vinyl blow-up things amuse me?

Wow Rob

You're agreeing with me AGAIN.

Now lets bring back Cowboys on Saturday morning TV. Lets wean them of reality until the the seeds of what's right and wrong are firmly planted.

Josey, you can't really think that Republicans want to make sure that education is just for the rich? Without education, there will be more crime, more welfare, more hell to pay, and Republicans don't want to pay for all that. That would mean higher taxes! And you know Repubs are against that!

Flts

You've got it all wrong. Teaching for the test is a result of Bush's "No child left behind" program. You aren't saying that Bush is a liberal, are you?

No flts, my teachers aren't idealized cowboys, they're real people who mean to do a good job. They're not perfect, but they do an honest job, and they do the very best that they are able to do, every day. Keep your cowboys, give me these people and parents that demand excellence from them and their kids, and I'll give you back a generation to be proud of. We don't need cowboys.
