I find it heartening that students including members of the corp of cadets recognized the gunfire for what it was and managed to bar entry to some of the classrooms.

Their actions may well have saved some of their classmates' lives and speaks highly of their character and courage.

We live in a world with alot of people. Many of whom are deranged. What drives an individual to kill others is beyond me, especially when they are unarmed innocents.
Do we have to revert back to the wild west where everyone wears a gun on their hip for personal protection? Man, it sure would have made a difference if someone was shooting back, maybe not so many would have died.

Seems now it was a Korean national student, with a resident alien visa. This provides credence to some of your comments that me must allow the authorities to complete their investigation, before making judgements and drawing conclusions. I think we're all numbed by this most recent horror, while also realizing there are no sanctuaries from violence or the selfish acts of deranged persons.

I seem to recall there was a much higher body count in WWII, Korea, and Viet nam as compared to Iraq. I don't seem to remember a lot of school shootings back in the Viet nam days, and I have not read or heard anything about such shootings during WWII and Korea. I'm not sure I see any correlation between the two.

The second most deadly shool shooting (after this one) happend in the 1960s in Texas. Vietnam happened in the 1960s.

If this thread continues to wax political, maybe we should consider moving in over to Dean.

Jim,

Its nowhere near political. Our references to Iraq and Vietnam are just for the purposes of looking at how political events influence our social and emotional lives.

I hope it stays here, it will be a much better discussion with much more participation.

I certainly do not advocate everyone wearing a gun on their hip. Your comment "Man, it sure would have made a difference if someone was shooting back, maybe not so many would have died." however is as close to a solution as our society will ever come to decreasing the body count in a controlled environment such as a classroom. I too believe it would have made a difference if someone had been shooting back.
