Everyone should have an address in their phone listed as "ICE", or In Case of Emergency. Paramedics look for it.

Yes, people are WAY too "connected" these days, and I personally have been getting off lists, including mail, email, phone, etceteras.

At the same time, my parents drove from SoCal to Park City, Utah this past week with no phone, and no one heard from them from five days. No, it's not travelling by covered wagon, but it would have been nice if they had a phone.

^^ My husband doesn't check the home phone messages...
and he often doesn't answer his cell phone, even when I call.
I'm stumped as to what to do.

[QUOTE=plankfarm,May 1 2009, 12:22 PM] This poses a question I have...

How do you make your emergency number stand out from the rest?
Does it just say 'call in emergency' in your address book?

^^ That is the reason I got my first cellphone way back in the day when you needed a backpack to carry it around. I often traveled alone and wanted to be able to call for assistance if I needed and also so that the kids could call me. +1 resisted getting a phone for years and only carried a work cellphone with him which he switched off at night. Now that we're members of the retirement set we keep them for emergency use and to stay in touch with the kids when we're away. I do not see our cellphone needs reaching beyond that point.

I do however, appreciate the technology and admire those who can simply pick it up and run with it. It has surpassed my desire (or ability) to keep up.

Heck my cell phone is a bare bones $30.00/month plan and I still think that is too much money.
It is. I pay $5.33/mo with my prepay Virgin Mobile plan ($15.90 every three mo's). I get 500 min's; after that it's $.18/min. But, I only carry it for emergencies. Seldom have it on; never give out the number except if traveling with someone. Right now my "credit" balance is $129...... told you I seldom use it. For me it's a great plan; may not be for you.

What's the AT&T monthly charge that goes with the iPhone?

Generally, I use my "peak" minutes, but I'm not exactly a frequent cell phone yacker, though I do use it several times a week, mostly to call Rick to say hello, while I'm on my lunch hour. I could probably do just fine with a Trac phone, which is what Rick has.

His phone has been averaging about $7.00/month, at most, and he always has plenty of minutes available. He only uses it to call home if he is running late from work. He's not much of a talker, never mind yacking on a cell phone.

I don't know what the internet phone plans cost, but a lot of the younger guys don't bother with a land line, so they save a few bucks there.

^^ That's probably what we should go with, but we have one of our grandkids on our plan. We pay about $110 a month for 3 months, 1100 minutes anytime, unlimited nights/weekends and unlimited texting (mainly because the granddaughter racks up about 5,000 texts a week). We have no phone in SC and the cellphones are our only phone service there. We have a landline at home that costs about $45 a month with no long distance. We use the cellphones for that as well.
I DO NOT like our carrier and would like to switch to a better carrier at renewal time.

There is a downside to the IPhone--the battery needs to be charged nightly. They've got to work on that one...

if you go into settings and make it so it does not look for emails until you look at them then that saves powe, also no noises when you type or get stuff save power. you can also change when it looks for networks, again saving power. the phone works fine, and yet the batter life is a weakness of sorts, that and the fact you cannot replace it when it goes so the phone has a finite life for sure, perhaps as long as the commitment you need to make to get it....i just love it, and again i have had some issues with dropped calls, if that happens connect it to itunes via your computer and see what needs to be updated, if anything.
