The Killer Angels
...So, let's try to keep this thread on topic.
After the Noreaster, we will start with the discussion of the characters. The author provides a brief bio of each of the main characters in the front of the book before he dives in. I figure we'll spend a day or two on that before we begin the discussion of the First Day. We can try to keep the discussion of each day going for about a week before we move forward to the next day.
I'm really looking forward to this. I hope you all are too.

Folks, please don't be offended if I split your posts that go off topic. I will be moving one or more from above. I have already moved two others. I'm trying to keep this thread on topic.
The first discussion will focus solely on the foreword. This is just a few pages at the front of the book. The discussion of the people in the book is, in my view, important to a full appreciation of Shaara's approach to the battle. Feel free to read ahead. We will discuss the foreword for a night or two before we move on to day 1.

When you read the foreword, consider-
How do the main characters see themselves?
How do they see the war and the coming battle?
How does Shaara set the mood of the battle through his description of the characters.
What personal qualities do these men value? How does that compare to modern warfare? Ancient warfare?

I think you also need to consider how Shaara sees the characters. Where his sympathies lie. Pay particular attention to the picture he paints of each character. I think that will be very telling as the story progresses.
