Ahem, excuse me, but my calendar says its only Aug. 16. I haven't had time to even read the cover yet.

I ask people to read the first few chapters carefully. They are key to a full understanding of the book and the battle. After the forward, we will deal with The Spy, Chaimberlain, Buford, and Longstreet before we read day one. We have plenty of time before the Fall Gathering.

Without question I think that the author is more sympathetic to the southern officers. He speaks of them very kindly with a degree of reverance, especially Lee.
He's not exactly hard on the northern officers, but he doesn't seem anywhere near as kindly disposed towards them.

Rob, do find Shaara sympathizes with the men or the cause they fight for?
I'm on my way to work now so I can't write more. I'll write more later.

The men. He clearly has a great deal of respect for the southern officers. Much more than for the northern officers. I'm not exactly sure how he feels about the cause (there may be some clues later on) but for now he seems to favor the southern officers.

Consider Rob's words above as your read the foreword. Do you agree?

Got the +1 a screen name - Vitito - so I'm hoping he'll post. He's not much of a chatter, though.

Hi everybody.
We will begin the on-line discussion on Monday with a review of the foreword. The foreword is very short and I expect people will or have read on in the book. After the discussion of the forward runs its course, we will move on to The Spy, Chaimberlan and Buford. I suspect we might spend a day on each. Again, as the discussion of each chapter dies down, we will move on to the next. This will bring us up to The First Day, which starts with the chapter entitled Longstreet. We may be able to reach that chapter by the 26th.
I'm looking forward to this and I hope you all are too. Enjoy the book this weekend.
