the data is the data. Sure, as is the case with a normaly distributed population, there will those outside of the bell curve. But, on average, your AVERAGE 50-55yr can not tolerate the same bad injuries as a 20yro.
My point was to note such exceptions, as I perceived a bit of grief amongst some of our fellow vintagers, and wanted to point out the fact that with good care, the human body can retain huge chunks of its physiologic reserve well into the 5th decade.

Feel free to disagree but the data is the data. Sure, as is the case with a normaly distributed population, there will those outside of the bell curve. I have to respectfully agree with TenBlade on this point. From a health standpoint, I feel that I'm extremely fortunate insofar as my heart is strong, my cholesterol is well within healthy ranges, I exercise vigorously and my blood pressure, etc. are well within the ranges considered to be healthy. However, I've noticed in the past 3 or 4 years that it is much more difficult to overcome various little illnesses that would only keep a younger person down a day or two. I shudder to think how I'd overcome a major accident. My mother who is closer to 80 than she is 70, is very active mentally and physically as well, but I've seen many people her age who ended up dying after breaking a bone.
