The DC Council approved Mayor Williams' financing plan for the stadium yesterday, removing a major stumbling block to bringing the team here. So it looks like baseball next Spring!

And today, MLB owners approved the move 29-1. Guess who the 1 was?

Update...Last night the DC Council voted against what was supposed to be a shoo-in plan for financing the new stadium. MLB made some additional concessions that seemed to seal the deal. But, NO!!! This could be a serious setback.

How did it come about that pro sports teams expect and DEMAND that the public buys a stadium for the team to use for its private profit?

My city has a publicly financed baseball stadium AND a publicly financed football stadium. Now NASCAR wants us to publicly finance a racetrack for which they won't even guarantee any race dates.

If Marion Barry was still Mayor he would be selling Crack-er-Jacks as a fund raiser.

^ HAHA...Did you know he just got elected to the City Council? The man has at least nine political lives. He is one of three new Council members who will definitely oppose the financing plan come January when they begin their terms. Lots of residents (many from his ward) feel public money should go for things other than a stadium that they don't think will benefit them anyway.

The Mayor and others have tried to sell the stadium as an economic boon for the area where it will be built (rundown industrial section on the Anacostia River), but some peeps aren't buying it.

There is still time to work out a deal to finance the stadium (deadline is 12/31), but who knows whether it will happen. Season tickets have been sold, and merchandise for the Nationals put on sale everywhere. There is plenty of blame to go around for this fiasco.

Major League Baseball is not, of course, part of the Mafia.

But they act exactly the same, meeting in secret, muscling out rivals, and blackmailing public officials to fork up tax dollars.

The only thing worse is the Players Association.
