The Olympics, 2008
Wow, what a great day at the Olympics so far.
The Men's 100M sprint was one of the most dominating performances in sports history. In a sub-10 second race, that kid Bolt won by so much that he was styling and celebrating before he ever crossed the line. Phelps may be the story of this Olympics, but the two absolute glory events have always been the 100M (once 100 yd) sprint and the Decathalon. Traditionally known as "the world's fastest man" and "the world's greatest athlete", the winner of the 100M dash is king of the Olympics. And he did it by just crushing the rest of the world in unbelievable fashion.
On top of that, Phelps did pick up his eighth gold (and seventh WR). And the women's marathon was an amazing display of courage. To break away so early and stay away to the finish like that was astounding.

+1 re the domination of the lightning Bolt in the 100m. Everybody is talking about his finish, braking form in an early celebration with 10m to go. But what I haven't heard anyone talk about is the start. Several runners beat Bolt out of the blocks. Imagine the time he might post if he ever gets a perfect start and runs all the way through the finish line. I'm looking forward to the 200.
Phelps has been amazing to watch. Everybody has been talking about the suits and the pool and the extra lanes and how that accounts for all the world records, somehow devaluing the 7 records Phelps has set. I beg to differ: watch the 200m IM. Phelps set a world record in this event (yawn). Oh, yeah. by the way he was the ONLY swimmer to even come close to the old mark!
The race I enjoyed the most was the oh-so-close 4x100 free relay when Jason Lezak ran (swam) down the French to keep Phelps' golden ambitions alive. Seeing the smack-talking French go down was just icing on the cake.
The Phelps win I still can't believe is the 100 fly...I keep looking at the replays and the slow mos and the strobe shots but I still can't figure out how Phelps managed to out-touch Milorad Cavic at the wall by 1/100th of a second.
I wish they showed sailing and table-tennis. Sailing because it's one Olympic sport I have actually engaged in and understand fairly well. Table-tennis because its amazing to watch the amount of effort, will, energy, and athleticism the competitors put into this 'silly game'.

The more I watch, the more I get into it. I just saw the womens rowing 2000 meters. During the medal ceremony, you could hear people singing the national anthem. Then they showed the ladies singing. The pride in their eyes and the joy in their hearts could be felt through the screen. If that doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you aren't an American.

On the other hand, the Americans are beginning to sound like a bunch of whiners for the women's "artistic" gymnastics. First they complaint about the age of the Chinese competitors, then they complaint about the scoring (even though I don't think there is any Chinese judge in the panels). It is getting tiring. I'm glad it will all be over after tonight.
