I bet your +1 is glad that shopping expedition is done.
Enjoy your new computer, ( post typed on my old fashioned desk top).

Yah, she thinks I'm anal. Can't help myself.... I'm driven to research stuff. Every now and then it bites me in the butt but 9 out of 10 times I am really glad I did it.

The Iomega unit I mentioned in a previous post is also available in a Windows version. I don't know if it's available in anything other than 1TB or 2TB models, though.
Can't believe the size of it. About the size of pack of smokes vs the 75 GB I have now that's about the size of a standard bible (didn't think I knew what one looks like - did you.
)

Got a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex 500 GB for $80 at Best Buy. I'd have to take pictures like Patty to fill it.

Well it's time....
...I decided to buy a 16" Toshiba laptop. It has a Intel Core i3-370M processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB HDD (7200rpm), Windows 7 HP 64-bit OS, etc., etc. Picking up a pair of new speakers to go with it by M-audio, AV40s. I may try out a new ergonomic keyboard as well. Also, plan on getting a 500GB external HD for backup.
As you see I ended up using most of the suggestions that came this way. Thanks all.

My only "layman" comment: I hope that you're not unhappy that you decided on a laptop, although Bill's "portability throughout the house" comment may have been a deciding factor for you. I'm glad that his "insider's view" was helpful. I'm happy sitting here in our computer desk (good ergonomics) on the second floor, with a full size keyboard and a large flat screen. I have my little 7" x 10" Netbook when I want to surf the web in the hammock out in the yard, or in the garage, or in the kitchen.
When are you picking up the new toys? Snow is falling here in Peeay, and it would be a good weekend to unpack expensive boxes

I don't do well on snap decisions - a Triumph Stag comes mind. As for the hardware, I have it - all except for the extra speakers which were not in stock. Fired up Windows last night but that's as far as I got.
It's been snowing here for three days. When it started I was out walking the dog in tennis shoes and needed boots (well almost) by the time I got home. It was one of those big flakes and lots of it snowfalls - loved it.
I'm hoping I can talk my local techy friend to come over and assist on the transfer this weekend. I don't want to screw that up.
PS- I prefer a desk and pc chair as well. I have no intensions of using it in my lap. It weighs nearly 7 pounds! As for screen size, it's a 16". I may or may not use my separate 19" in place of it.... I'll try them both out. These days big nice LED monitors are dirt cheap. For tooling around I have the new iPad.
[QUOTE=paS2K,Dec 2 2010, 02:58 PM] ...Whatever, when I got a new PC 18 months ago, I paid an extra 20 bucks for something called a TORNADO "data transfer device" **. It's like a tension carpenter tape measure, with a USB cable coming out opposite sides.
From a poster writing about his new pc...
[QUOTE]If you are upgrading from XP, this machine comes with MS Windows 7. It is not mentioned anywhere that Outlook Express is not functional with Windows 7! Microsoft does have free downloads to replace OE, so you don't necessarily have to buy Office. The new email app comes in a package of free multi-functional apps from Microsoft, and I am not up on what all functions it covers, but it looks interesting. Of course, the machine comes pre-loaded with trial versions of Office Suite, so you can purchase the Suite as you prefer.
