Don't mean to go off track, but tell us more about her and give us the rest of the story. She does look interesting. Maybe post the picture(s) and the story in the "Photos" thread instead.

I'm going to make an hour appointment at the Ann Arbor Apple store for a intro, demo, etc. on converting to and using a Macbook. I might jump into it or I might run.
FYI in case you go with a Mac. I just received my Iomega eGo Desktop Firewire 800/USB Mac Edition HD (1 TB) today. Using Mac's Time Machine app, I cloned my entire HD in about twenty minutes. It's a breeze to use. And at $115 I consider it a bargain over the Apple Time Capsule. The eGo isn't wireless, but I don't see the need for wireless just for performing occasional backups.

The 1TB is $115 at Amazon. I think the 2TB is around $176, if memory serves.

Well it's time.

Originally wanted desktop but getting a laptop. - desktops are out of fashion unless you are a gamer and for whatever reason they tend to be less reliable.

Originally wanted Dell, then Apple, but getting a Toshiba. - Apple is the best product on the market but since I'm not into music or video I can't justify spending twice a Windows machine, especially since there's no local store and I'm comfortable in a Windows world. Toshiba ranked in the top three of most reliability/service surveys.

Originally wanted wired but getting wireless. - since I had to buy a wireless router for the iPad, I'm already there, plus I already have a wireless printer; just never used it that way.

Originally wanted high performance but getting a more everyday machine. I think today's machines will be out-of-date quickly since the iPad touch-screen approach will really take off in three years or so.

Originally planned to spend $2k with everything but will spend half that. I switched from thinking long term to short term and went for the basics rather than more-than-need-now-approach.

Originally thought I would order direct on line but will get at local Best Buy. The price was $200 less than mfg'r list and more importantly, if I have a problem, I need only get it to the local store rather than ship it somewhere.

I decided to buy a 16" Toshiba laptop. It has a Intel Core i3-370M processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB HDD (7200rpm), Windows 7 HP 64-bit OS, etc., etc. Picking up a pair of new speakers to go with it by M-audio, AV40s. I may try out a new ergonomic keyboard as well. Also, plan on getting a 500GB external HD for backup.

As you see I ended up using most of the suggestions that came this way. Thanks all.
