Lainey,
With the exception of some spam, I have every mail from the last 13 years.
If I dug around I could probably find another 3 or 4 years.

I did trash a whole bunch from a friend who mails a large amount of " mature content" to me.
But why would you keep all that? Kind of like keeping old paid phone bills.....

One reason to keep old emails is that the system also will keep whatever attachments are hooked to those emails. This can be very handy when you're looking for some file that you know you got from someone but forgot to keep a separate copy of. HPH

Most of my email is "social" correspondence. No need to save much of anything.

sigh....
so my existing wireless router got flaky on me the other night and wouldn't work for a while.
so I got a new whiz-bang do-everything replacement that seems to be pretty cool.

the only part of the task that is really odious is going around and updating all of the old wireless devices with new keys...

the two droids are a real pain the butt becuase you have to put those long codes in by hand.

I also OVER use my email system to keep stuff in FOLDERS for most any topic. In many cases, I should SAVE the attachments as docs but I usually don't do it. I DO know from an Outlook blog that one should NOT keep a huge number of email messages in their InBox....as a huge number can slow down the system. Just a couple days ago I took my whole InBox and moved it into the Delete folder...after checking for items that were impt to save.

Besides purely social stuff, I use the email system to track my professional stuff, Habitat for Humanity bizness, S2000 stuff, travel-related emails, church council bizness, insurance items, online records of payment, and God knows what else.

With this thread in mind, I just counted and find that I have 76 folders and sub-folders in my Outlook.....not counting the older ones that have been automatically ARCHIVED. I know that many folks us the "search Outllook" function to find emails by keywords or senders, but I prefer to KNOW where to look. Only rarely do I fail to find stuff in one scan.

How often do you actually need to refer to a really old email?

How many years of tax returns do you keep?

Sounds like we have a some pack rats around here.

You're probably right but there are a few things that have legal importance re: a lawsuit in progress

In general, I admit to needing to throw out a lot of sh*t....both virtual and physical paper files

Yes, I also need to weed out tax backup that's more than 7 years old. I will just keep the Federal and State returns....for historical importance They will remind me in the years ahead that I actually EARNED filthy lucre in the past....

I am writing this from "The Bermuda Triangle" for computers. If you are not sure where that is - it's over my house!

Wow, been on the phone with high level Apple support people for 1-1/2 days. The Apple store screwed up my transfer such that in the end I had to reload the Mac HD after many attempts at another way to over come locked folders, etc. This AM we worked on trying to eliminate the thousands of duplicate photos. At one point I had 15k photos. Now I'm down to 10k. But, really I only have 5k. I think the other 5k maybe thumbnails. Not sure if everyone has them, or I'm special.

One support person from Canada was great and really helped sort things out. The Apple store has already contacted me, apologized, and returned my $100 while leaving me on their one-on-one plan. Can't expect more than that unless you have Legal Bill on call.

While it may not sound like it, I am pretty much all set and know way more than I ever wanted to about my Mac.
