I always thought that area presented a great business opportunity, I just couldn't figure out how to capitalize on it,.

I actually have been to and enjoyed the area immensely. Not the Somali part but the Kenyan coast.

Back in 1990 I spent 5 weeks in Kenya and actually went to Lamu on the northeast coast not once but twice during the trip (you fly into Mombassa and then hop up the coast on small Beechcraft to Malindi then to Lamu. Lamu sits about 60 miles or so south of the Somali border.

I had a awesome time. On the second trip, I shared a house with three other people (some Dutch folks) that included a house boy and my share of it was about $4.00 per day. That was some trip.

I suspect the area might be a little bit different lately. It was somewhat sketchy at the time and you had to be aware of your surroundings but it was really a blast. Did some diving in the area too. I think they started warning tourists away from the area about 5 years ago after a couple of "snatch and transport" type abductions out of the area by Somalis.

You people have no sense of adventure.

We spent a month in Kenya and Tanzania. Far and away the best trip we've ever taken. We bought a VW camper at the factory in Weidenbruck and spent a long three months in Europe. We carved out the trip to East Africa. The animals look so much bigger and more beautiful the in zoos. Nyali Beach just north of Mombasa is amazing. We want to do the Okavango Delta in Botswana soon.
