The Vacation Thread 2004
A friend of mine just arrived to do some tarpon fishing with me.
Unfortunately he got a call on the way down that there was water running out of all the doors of his house. When he got here, he found a flooded house and a broken washing machine hose. It seems he forgot to shut the valve off before he left a couple months ago and it broke and ran for several hours inside his house. The entire house was filled with water to the level of the door jams. (we don't have basements here). Nice mess. But I did learn something and I thought I'd pass the vacation reminder along.
I just checked my hoses and replaced them with steel braided ones including bath kitchen and shower. I put a big note on the fridge to turn that stuff off before we leave on our vacation
Hopefully we'll get out tarpon fishing tomorrow, right now there are giant dehumidifiers turning the inside of his house into a desert climate with 10% humidity.
Don't let the water gremlins get you while you're gone.

For what it's worth, I always turn the water off to my home before leaving it vacant for vacation. I turn the gas water heaters to "Pilot light" only, though my plumber says that is not needed. I've had too many plumbing problems, and have hard of too many people comming home to a flood, to do otherwise.

I spent the month of April driving my S2000 9274 miles through 21 states. I averaged over 29.5 mpg. Trying to avoid the fickle weather of early spring, I took a southern route. I promptly got snowed on in Arizona and New Mexico. Was very painful having to drive through 2 states with the top up. The rest of my time in the south (Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky), the weather was clear, all be it a little cool. After spending a few days in Ohio visiting relatives, I continued to Pennsylvania to see Gettysburg. An awe inspiring place. Would have stayed longer, but rain cancelled plans for more outdoor activities. On to New York and the Baseball Hall of Fame. I had wanted to go there for about 40 years. On to Niagara Falls. Freezing cold and rainy. Got some good photos, but damn near froze. More snow in Erie, Pennsylvania. Back to Ohio and visiting more relatives. Lots of cousins I hadn't seen in a while. On the way home I visited in Carruthersville, MO with a WWII buddy of my Father. Went to Abilene, KS to the Eisenhower Museum and Library. Thought I would spend an hour and spent 4. All most went deer hunting west of Dodge City. The S isn't a recommended weapon for deer hunting. Never saw so many together other than at Pebble Beach. Colorado was nice. Saw a good sunset outside of Pueblo. Utah had some incredible scenery. Horrendous wind, but nice scenery. Followed by more snow. Snow in Nevada, too. Why only in the desert did I have to drive in snow? Drove route 50 in Nevada, "The Loneliest Road in America". There were other roads that had less traffic. Went to Rachel, Nv just to drive the "Extraterrestrial Highway". On to one of my favorite places, Death Valley. Great scenery and finally some warm weather. May 1 I finally got home, after all, I had to be at work on the 3rd. During that month on the road, I saw a total of 4 S2000's. One in Arizona, one in Alabama, and 2 red ones in Ohio. The one I saw in Orrville was probably the one I saw 2 years ago when I visited.
After a month on the road, I know I could handle retirement. I didn't miss work once. Now if I could only afford to retire. After a month back at work, I wish I could take more vacation to destress again. Oh well, I guess I can wait for my week in October

Wow 2KIS2K, what a great trip. I just finished a detailed account of the battle at Gettysburg. The sheer numbers in such a small area of fighting . . . it almost seems unreal. When I finally make it there it will be a solemn occasion.
And how about that gas mileage! Great stuff, I'm jealous.

Well, I got back home from road trip at 4am this morning. I had to be at work today, so I drove the last 27+hrs straight...except I stopped in Memphis to check out Grace Land. I'll post some pics soon. New Orleans was GREAT! then I had dinner with the one and only hoostooks; another fantastic time and then to Austin where I worked during the day and played like a rock star at night (I'll post SOME pics), then to Dallas to visit some med school buddies and have a mod installed by Marrucci. I stayed a day over, so I had to straight back (sleeping for a couple of hrs at a rest stop).

Or at least none you are going to tell us about...Breaking the HR curse! (Hampton Roads Cowboys for those who don't know.)
