clay bar use+ engine dressing
just got back home from the uk where I bought a mcguires claybar kit and cd2 engine dressing kit
it consists of a small bar of clay( more like sticky putty ) and a spray bottle of quick detailer fluid
the directions on the box are very limited/ vague
I used the directions available on autopia site ( very good )
on sunday ( today ) I clayed 3 cars,( it takes about 20 minutes to do a car if you dont hang around)
the s2k
the merc of my wife and an old nissan 4x4
all 3 came out with silky smooth paint ,which makes it really easy to wash and wax later
you may think that the car is clean ( just washed ) but whan you use the clay you will see it gets brown on the surface from the small bits of grit it picks up
the quick detailer fluid will also go a light brown
the secret according to me when using the clay is to keep the surface you are working on just moist enough to keep the clay moving freely wihout sticking
as soon as you start to pick up grit fold it into a ball and re flatten it
sometimes a quick spray on the clay itself helps it slide better
once clayed give the car rinse and wipe and you are ready to wax
(by the way after years of using a chammy leather to wipe down I an totally sold on microfibre towels, they pick off so much water and are so easy to wring dry
by the way they pick up moisture best if they are already a bit damp to start with)
later on the merc and s2k I used mcguires canuba wax applied very thinly
( when the surface is very smooth you can spread the wax much further)
putting it on thinly saves a lot of rubbing down later on , as well as speeding up the drying time
the results on both vehicles was a very shiny wet look ( horefully some pics later )
I also used cd2 engine dressing on the s2k engine cover
it brought out a light gloss on the cover ( I didnt use it all over , too sticky )
in the engine dresssing kit was included a cd2 engine cleaner aerosol
this was used on the rather dirty nissan engine
it worked moderately well, but did not remove all the sticky dirt / oil from the engine
I also used the clay on the front window of the s2k , with a lot of lube and it indeed picked off more dirt from the window
What the clay doesnt pick up is tar, I needed to use tar remover for this
cheers
