not sure what you mean by regular clay... dont use artists clay, play-doh, or any other clay except detailers clay.
other clays have small sand or other grit which can scratch your paint.

there are several types of detailers clays- you can use any of those.
some choices are here:

I think the answer you're looking for is kits generally come with the lubrication the manufacturer intend for you to use with the clay. The regular bar assume's you have your own method of lubrication already. Most have found that a squirt bottle with car wash shampoo and water will serve the same function as the lube that comes with the kits...

But I agree with the other posts thus far...There are differences with the clays- fine grit, heavy, etc. Thanks to the suggestions I've received from these guys, auto clay is auto clay. I used Clay Magic from Autozone last weekend, but also enjoy the Zaino Z18. Only bad experience was Sonus Green.

Just no art clay

I found that "Fine" clay is safer to use for people new to claying...you don't have to be quite as careful, and you can clay more often.

Just make sure to keep it all lubed, don't press hard (let the clay do the work), and scrap any fallen clay.
