How to remove stain/residue on the hood
Hi Everyone.
I notice a few days ago that there is a number of resdue on the hood. The residue probably came from the pipe in the apartment garage. I took the car to car wash but the residue did not come out. I tried to use hot water with good car detergent and tar remover for car, none worked. I used my nail gently scratch the residue and it came off, but I do not want to continue because I am afraid I would scratch the paint. The residue looks like some sort of mineral deposit from the drop after it dried. The residue is not paint or not oil.
I want to ask the experts what else I can do to remove the residue safely. Products I need to buy? Or bring it back to the dealer or detailer?
Thanks.

steps i would take:
1. paint cleaner
if that doesnt get it,
2. xenit
if that doesnt get it,
3. clay
my guess is that you will solve this before step.3- but if not, post back here and we will tell you how to use clay and what to do if clay doesnt work
good luck!

If you know for a fact that the residue is tar-based, Tarminator will melt it right off your car - literally!
When I'm detailing a car with stubborn spots, what I'll normally do is use Tarminator to quickly disolve the tar deposits, then I'll claybar it.
You could use a cleaner like HD-Cleanse or P21s GEPC (or the like) but if your residue is a "solid mass" that could end up causing scratches if you don't do it right. If it looks like dried liquid or somesuch, the polish would work fine.
Of course, after these steps, it's going to require a rewaxing, but that's not a big deal to me.

Hello, I brought it to the dealer's body shop, they used combination of wax, clay, and clearner, and some of the residue came off, not all of them. The body shop's manager said reside went into the clear coat and the only way to remove the reside is to repaint the hood. The manager said the residue will not cause rust.
Is there anything else I can try? I do not want to repaint the hood because of few residue, which is visible.
I do not think the body shop use quik clay, should I try it?
Thanks.

wow, sounds like strange advice to me...
first, even if the residue went through the clear coat (which is pretty unlikely), it is even more unlikely that it went into the paint. the only reason to repaint is if the paint is stained or damaged (or if you are a dealer trying to make a buck).
i would still take the steps above-
paint cleaner, then
either xenit or tarminator
after that then clay it.
if you are thinking of repainting anyway, you cant make it worse!!!
worth spending the money on those products, imo to try to save the cost of a paint job.
from your experience, i would be reluctant to take the car back to the dealer.
(i should say that the dealer has seen your car and i have not- there is some chance that he is right- its just a pretty strange diagnosis; and a pretty unlikely one).
