Default Spots on hood

I have a few spots on my hood that have been there since I purchased the car and now they are really starting to bother me, I feel like I can't get the car clean. The spots are not that big maybe the size of a penny, they feel rough and are a lighter color than the color of the car. The only thing I have tried is clay bar, I have not tried any other methods or products to remove them. If someone could point me in the right direction to get rid of these spots I would greatly appreciate it.

Here is a picture of one of the spots. ( it just finished raining that is why there are water spots)

Thanks

One of the true experts will chime in soon, but I have to say, that looks like your clear coat has been removed in that area. Are you sure the spot is "on" the surface, and that it isn't "below" the surface of the surrounding paint?

It looks to me like something has been splattered on the paint that removed or discolored it.

I hope one of the experts can provide you with an easy fix.

Looks like clear coat missing.....

When you drag your nail across it, does it catch? Can you tell which level is higher or lower? If you bring your finger nail from inside the spot, and try to drag it out, does it catch? If so, That would mean part of the clear is missing...

You could try getting a bottle of touch up clear, and apply it so it blobs us a little, and then wetsand it down smooth, if it really is missing clear, but thats a last resort...

You could try polishing, see if it brings back some of the gloss, and if it does, you might only be able to see it if you get really close, or maybe not even see it at all anymore..

Good luck.

i was unable to blow it up...
but from what i can see, i have to agree with the guys above (they are both modest experts imo)- my main hesitation in diagnosing this is the shape of it (and not being able to blow it up)-

btw, dont let your car waterspot or you could will end up with more craters!!

The spot is rough, and when I run my fingernail from the paint across the spot and then back to the regular paint it feels like the spot rises, but it is such a slight difference it is very hard to tell. I also tried to take closer pictures of it but I couldn't get the camera to focus when it was that close. I think I am gonna try and polish it, would I be able to do this by hand?

Thanks for the help

you can try polishing by hand. it will be alot of work...

Do you happen to have any diesel fuel? or Denatured Alcohol?

You could try them, to see if it takes whatever it is (If it's on the surface, like you say it is) off the surface.

If its over the clearcoat, try using some OTC products. Any Turtle wax polish, or scratchX will do.

Before my I knew anything about detailing, I used to own the 2 green and red tubs of Turtle Wax Polish and Rubbing Compound. It worked in taking out things like that.
