Default Softop is Wearing From the Inside

I have a 2005 model year and it looks like my top is developing a very small wear spot on the inside. Sitting in the passenger seat, it appears that the wear is occuring on the upper right hand side where the metal bar is rubbing against the soft top. Its not worn enough to form a hole but am convinced that if nothing is done about this, a hole will form eventually.

My question is what measures can I take to at least slow down the wear? Right now, I just put a piece of cloth and used shipping tape to hold it in place. Pretty ghetto fix....i know

I heard that Honda sells a patch kit. Anybody know the part #? Anybody use this and can shed some light on how it applies?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't have any problems yet, but would like to have a preventative measure. There is a thread in the Tell Honda forum on this very issue.

i would check the warranty on this... should be covered on your car since it is fairly new-

dont know the part number, but do know that you patch from the inside- but as above, i would be pushing to get honda to fix it.

Yeah, I saw the thread in "Tell Honda" forum. My wear spot is in the exact same location. Not nearly as bad as the Original Poster of that thread but I figure if I don't do anything about it, it will eventually be that bad.

I'm thinking, even with a new soft top, wouldn't the top still wear in the same spot? Would it be better to put some kind of reinforcement patch there to prevent the wear?

I actually just got back from the dealership (Honda World of Westmister). What they said is that since the wear didn't go all the way through to form a hole, they are not able to authorize a new top. They want me to come back in on Tuesday to have their upholstery guy take a look at it and reinforce the area so that they can prevent a hole from ever forming.

Cool, please keep us posted, I would like to know what they do so that I can get mine taken care of before any possible wear.

S2KenC - that is rubbish (might be a difference between Honda UK and Honda America) but that is a design/manufacturing fault - you should insist on a new hood and a new frame if this is the cause not a bleeding patch. Get them to send pics to Honda America / or deal direct with them and skip the dealer and their rubbish (rant over!!)

Thanks for the concern robs_silver_s2k.

I do recognize that the the cause of the soft top wear is due to a design defect/flaw. I honestly feel that a new soft top and frame, although nice, is not going to address the issue with the wear. It'll just wear through again eventually unless some measures are taken to reinforce the area. I'm looking for the dealership to do something similar to what mzm70 had posted.

I contaced Honda of America about this issue and they stated that they cannot offer a replacement of the softtop if there is no hole. What they can ofer is a "repair" which is what the dealership is doing.
