Downhill? No way, other than loosing some of the biggest contributors to the FAQ and DIY areas of the website, things are going good. The local forums still provide new friendships with others with the same love of their car and the great guides that were written quite a while ago are still there to be read.

We all know the help "feature" doesn't work the best all the time, so why flame a noob who just got his car for asking questions like what are the best CAI's for you buck? Especially since there is a good chance that without asking we may all miss out on a discussion that has evolved since the last time it was hot, whether by new parts that have come out or by people who have thought of something new to share.

And of course with the prices dropping we can always look forward to Johnny Tran and his Honda 2000 coming to town soon!
I don't mean to sound mad, I'm not but someone only sixty days old casting judgement on how it's not like the good ol' days just isn't right. You honestly can't have anything to add to this discussion at this early stage of your involvement. I'm happy you are here and reading it and learning from it but don't expect me to take what you say seriously.

Complaints about know-it-all noobs which is what xviper said he could no longer stand may be directed at posts like yours; Johnny.

Ouch. I think he was talking about the "search" feature. I don't think he was really complaining in any way about the site going downhill...he was giving a couple of suggestions, I don't see anything wrong with that, noob or veteran.

[QUOTE=NFRs2000NYC,Oct 22 2006, 10:59 PM]Perhaps if more people offered help in their field of expertise, took the time to post helpful information, and offered constructive useful posts, rather than complain, it might be climbing up the hill.

I know, I said I wasn't mad but WTF is this all about? This is the sort of creeping problem everyone is talking about.

And of course with the prices dropping we can always look forward to Johnny Tran and his Honda 2000 coming to town soon!

I totally agree. I think you know how well that kind of comment (and thinking) sits with me.

It's a subset of the older members that are running the place down, because apparently they are too old and arrogant to accomodate change. The more I see of their whining the more I feel like following XViper's lead.

The kids are not the problem.
What's amusing and proof that you can't please everyone is that the older members say the forums have become overrun with new disrespectful young punks and how the lowered prices are only breeding more and others, myself included and as I stated above, say the problem is actually found in a stodgy, arrogant and intolerant elder population many of whom don't even own the car anymore but met a bunch of people when they did and still hang out here because of them. It's hard to express any opinion on this without pissing someone off but there it is.

I've been working through this problem in my new local community. The problem has been a gang of grey haired thugs from the olden days, 80% of whom no longer own an S2000, beating on and chasing away new owners (the very people they sold their cars to). To turn it around I ousted the COs and brought in some new blood and within 2 weeks they had their first meet/drive/dinner with a lot of new faces showing up. There had not been an organized meet in over a year previous to this.

It's a constant struggle to keep turning over the membership to keep it fresh and vibrant and at the same time clear away entrenched dead wood. I don't want long-time and very supportive members like xviper and many in the vintage group to leave but there is no such thing as forever and nobody is immune to being moved aside if they are taking away from the enjoyment of others, new or old.

I think this is a some of the older members have not considered before. Thanks for posting it - this is something that should be pointed out more often.

And from one of the people who doesn't have his S2000 anymore, but made too many good friends and still enjoys the site more than any other. I'll also admit to being someone who has grumbled the "younger owner" sentiment - I won't do that anymore - you've made an excellent point.

I certainly miss woodwork, ultimate lurker, and (now) xviper. Billman still posts, but less frequently.

Having said that, I agree with those who say s2ki is still a great forum - the info is there for those who look or ask for it, and the camaradarie is also there if you choose your friends (Vintage, for example).
The problem that a newcomer faces is that of trying to seperate the wheat from the chaff. Even if you use the search function, the threads often contain both, and unless you already have some idea of what the answer is, it's hard to tell which is which. As our original experts move on to bigger and better things, we are going to see an ever increasing accumulation of chaff. As long as we have people like Billman here there will be solid information available to those who can find it, but finding it is going to get harder with the passage of time.

To me this begs a question. Is there anything we can do to help our membership seperate the wheat from the chaff?
