Important Privacy Information, please READ
Actually it is a very popular method of tracking people in databases with public information.
Lets say a person lives at zip code 22124 and was born on Jan, 1 1971.
A city will have many different ZIP codes with each one designating a specific area, borough or town. Next take into consideration your birthdate. How many people in your town were born the same exact year and day as you?
For example... if we take Vienna, Virginia. In 2000 it had an estimated population of 14,750 (per its website).
Its age distribution is as follows:
0-17 21.6%
18-24 8.4%
25-44 33.9%
45-64 25.9%
Over 65 10.2%
According to USPS the following zip codes are associated with Vienna:
22027 ACCEPTABLE STANDARD
22124 ACCEPTABLE STANDARD
22180 ACCEPTABLE (DEFAULT) STANDARD
22181 ACCEPTABLE (DEFAULT) STANDARD
22182 ACCEPTABLE (DEFAULT) STANDARD
22183 ACCEPTABLE (DEFAULT) STANDARD
22184 ACCEPTABLE (DEFAULT) UNIQUE
22185 ACCEPTABLE (DEFAULT) UNIQUE
Per year there are a possible 365.25 birthdays (taking into account leap year).
So right off the mark we can narrow the search down to 5000 people... and that was just by using an age group. That age group spans 19 years which gives us 6939.75 possible birthdates. Vienna has 8 possible zip codes. Chances are they aren't all used, or that certain ones are designated for certain routes, possibly residential vs. commercial, etc. Lets just say that Vienna used only one of its zip codes. So we'd end up with 5000 people in one zip code spanning a possible 6940 birthdays. But the odds get better when you consider that we know the exact birthdate.
I dont' think it would take much more investigation to pinpoint a specific person.
What is it good for? Well... lets say you registered at Yahoo and entered your zip and birthdate. Chances are they track everywhere you go within their site. They sell this anonymous data to a financial company that has a huge database of their credit card holders. They do a correlation between zip and birthdate with the other public information obtained from Yahoo... and now they know probably more about you than you would like them to.

what is the big deal??? if someone wanted your VIN, they can get it, no matter if you put it here or not. if you have a problem with putting your vin# here, don't do it. If someone wants to trace your IP, they can do it, no matter if you use a proxy server or IP masking software.
CTHREE was just informing us of his policy. I get enough junk mail and spam that you know, i could care less if he starts selling my information. Who knows, maybe i would like to get something from a company that is specializing in products for a white s2000 that lives in richmond, va ??? who knows... who cares!!...

Wow. Get a life. Please put this all in some kind of perspective. Not only do I not have that much information but I'm way too lazy to try and conger up some bizarre stalking scheme. There are many people here who have been here since day one. Never have they received anything of a marketing nature from me or anyone else as a result of the information I do have.
S2000 Internaional is not:
Chaos,
the CIA,
the FBI,
the Mob,
you get the point. The information I collect, which I need to run the site as it is, is minimal and useful. The ZIP code city and state are used by those organizing events to make sure the people in the area know about them and also the local clubs use that information to contact local owners.
Let's just be reasonable ok? I will respond to reasonable requests.

Geez, go away for a few days and things get goofy. Here's what I think:
1. The comments here imply that one is important enough to be of interest to anyone for any reason. I know I'm not. Are you?
2. It is a lot more likely that Hond will rent your name and address and car demographics to a dealer. This is the most likely point of lapse, don't you think.
3. If you are not afraid of Honda, then how about your state's MVA which also rents lists.
3. As a rentable list, cthree's tiny list of owners has no value. Even the smallest rentable lists generally work in 5000 name increments. Again, Honda is your biggest worry in this regard.
4. If you're concerned about privacy, you should pay much more attention to "Nazi John" Ashcroft and his activities than S2000online.

I think to help put things in perspective. We have set the site up the way we have to benefit "you", the continuation of developing of our community.
If you go back to the old days before s2ki/s2000online, the site many of us visited was not secure, and was down many times. Since inception of s2ki we have not been hacked, no information has been stolen, and we have not sold your information to anyone. Cthree's and krazik's top priority is security. These 2 guys are very good at what they do. I think this has been demonstrated effectively.
We will continue to enhance s2ki and offer great things to owners. This is how we give back to the community. Everyone should be concerned with security issues on the internet. No one wants to experience privacy invasion. If for any reason someone doubts us "s2ki" please let us know why you are concerned.
For now, I would suggest you do as you wish. We have debated this issue for a long time. No one is forcing you submit information you are not comfortable with.
BTW..
on my vacation, I saw a 2000 S2000 Silver/Black with the last digit's 010 anyone on board.
Wow, thought I'd check in and see what was filling up this topic. We live in a society that thrives on fear and greed. One only needs to listen to any newspaper headline, wall street report, sales pitch, etc. and most of the attention getting triggers are fear or greed. But when it comes to a car club, frankly I'm not worried. The fear that VIN# will be misused or that the club officer's will be overcome by greed is extremely unlikely.
As said, the VIN# is there for anyone who wishes to look in the front window and write it down. Naturally our liscense# is in plain view. In fact, I'm disappointed to hear the VIN# can't be connected to me (if I understood that correctly), since it would helpful if the club's data base could make a correlation between VIN#'s and the risk of potential manufacturing problems. For example, I recall the NSX site saying cars between xxx and xxx have a certain build issue. And, I believe they were able to narrow down the VIN# window based upon member's input -- not from info Honda made public. I view this as a good service.
Secondly, having been on this site for nearly a year I don't recall ever receiving any Marketing BS from anyone in reference to my owning an S2000. And, I appreciate that and expect the policy to continue.
I think that folks in the computer business who do security for a living or folks who do skip-tracing are of course much more aware of the potential for misuse of information than us average folks. Cthree's assurance that Marketing types don't get lists, is sufficient enough for me. And I belive any good computer skip tracer can find out just about anything on anyone if they wish to. Hell, any good BS'er can generally call up any company and by mis-representing who they are, learn just about anything they want (i.e., this is the telephone repairman and I'm just checking....).
If you worry about being bombarded by sales BS, I can tell you that I filled the forms and sent them to the national registry reguesting I not be solisted by phone or mail. It works. I seldom, if ever, get junk mail, phone BS, or even spammed by email. And I add to that, if you don't break the law or go out of your way to piss people off, you can list your phone number in the phone book and your VIN# at your favoriate web site.
Thanks Cthree and team for your continued support and efforts, which are apprecaited.
