Search...can anyone do it?
I have never gotten search results returned to me. Never. Not once in 200+ days of being a paid member. All I have ever gotten are errors. Do others get results?
Maybe it is when I search, maybe it is what I search. As it is an internet server, there is no way my machine can mess it up. It might be time to dump the free-bee MySQL, only thing I have ever seen from it has been errors...My current error text follows....only serious tech-heads should read....you have been warned.
The following is a search for "video game" in "S2000 Talk". Got the same error searching in "All Forums". It appears to be a time out.
mySQL query error: INSERT INTO ibf_search_results (id,search_date,topic_id,topic_max,sort_key,sort_o rder,member_id,ip_address,post_id,post_max) VALUES ('e9f3f77ada71cc47e2af3a0930b13d9f','1111808173',' 271748','1','last_post','desc','38795','24.29.189. 186','5155569,5164464,5166354,5166456,5166523,5167 893,5168867,5168885,5168966,5182165,5182891,519021 7,5192030,5197522,5197702,5198394,5201718,5208537, 5205662,5205953,5206026,5206195,5206864,5206963,52 07025,5207414,5207522,5207833,5218413,5224990,5225 134,5231678,5232599,5232795,5232900,5232969,523373 6,5233923,5235843,5237601,5245198,5248859,5249733, 5259065,5276785,5278335,5281821,5284630,5289295,52 95245,5300856,5300928,5305871','53')

Make sure you do an AND search. If you don't you'll get a lot of results of poor quality or it will timeout as you've experienced. That is: search for "+video +game" rather than "video game". The later will search for anything with either video or game in it (OR). I'm going to change AND to the default and tweak some the search form fields this weekend to try and improve it.
When I click search on the top menu I enter "+video +game" in the keywords area and click the button to perform the search. I get 2 pages of results including this thread at position #3 of the first page. When I enter "video game" it just sort of sits there until it times out with an error.
That's why I'm going to revamp the search form and make AND the default method. Try searching with + in front of the keywords until Monday and you should get good results.

I spent a bunch of time over the weekend looking at how to make search easier. I'm not sure that it can be, I think at this time the only thing I can do is offer some advice on how to make the results better by explaining how to enter keywords.
I added a Search Help link to the search form for ready access and I've also posted a how-to topic and pinned it to the top of this forum:

It's not a good as just letting you enter your keywords and then returning the results you are looking for but it's the best I can do at the moment. HTH

Negative. It is what it is. Search is based on something called "Fulltext" which is a feature of the database engine we use. The search syntax for keywords is that defined by the database engine not the forums software.
