Just did this tonight...even video taped it so I may post it on YouTube or something. The ball and socket were bone dry. I believe that the dimple in the fork's socket is there to retain lubricant, but that of course can't last forever.
This did help the issue slightly, so driving has become easier, though it does still occur. Not as bad, but it's still there. Looks like the gearbox will be coming out for a new shaft.
