new convertibles
Below are pics of the Pontiac Solstice & Saturn Sky. GM's promising the Solstice for $20,000 US (S2000 is around $32,000). Both look like they offer 2-tone leather as well. Even though these wannabe's may be crap compared to an S2000, people will buy because of price & dealership incentive's offered, plus they can drive a new car. A guy I use to work with went for the Miata over the S2000 in '04 for those reasons.
Not too long ago, there really wasn't a lot of choice ($50,000 and under) for a 2-seater convertible.
So I'm wondering... in a few years, how do you think this will this affect those of us who may want to sell our S's or just take comfort in the fact that there are few cars on the road that look remotely similar to the S ?

I believe the solstace is going to come with 150hp - basically a sunfire with the top off....so I am not worried about it.
Apart from that, I give the solstace a single - it looks good, but I don't think it will have the performance....

I don't have much faith in GM, but the Saturn Sky looks really hot. Really wide and low, like a baby XLR without the chiseled look.
The chassis is basically a 3/4-sized Corvette. Weight is a big question mark though.

i also think a factor that will make or break the popularity is the factor of the after market parts and accessories.
when i see a J's Racing this or a Mugen this for them, oh gawd, look out mississauga

I'm a fan of the styling of the Sky, although the Solstice leaves much to be desired. Either way, I don't see it significantly hurting the value of the S as consumers will still recognize the superior build quality of the Honda vs. a GM. Not to mention the performance advantages of the S.
IMO, I kinda like the fact that the vast majority of buyers who just want a convertible will look at these other options, keeping (hopefully) the S buyers as the enthusiasts who recognize the Honda's superior performance. I can definitely see these two vehicles hurting Miata sales, however, as the Miata was the one alternative for people who didn't want to shell out $50k, yet still have a decent little convertible...
