Well, my problem was determined to be a defective/stretched rod in #3 which caused the damage. (Kissed the valves and then kaboom!).
It was covered (thank the lord, because the bill came out to just shy of $14,000!)
Just to let you know, a mis-shift that *just* pings off the rev limiter is enough to cause a problem like this... stretch one or more rods. Even a corrected mis-shift (i.e. 5th to 2nd and WOOPS, engine wail, disengage the clutch 0.25-0.75 seconds later to stop the revving) is enough to do this type of damage which the car still being driveable.
Have you noticed any valve noise? Excessive "ticking"? before the catastrophe?
Although most hondas that I have owned have successfully been able to rev 500-1000rpm beyond the factory limiter without serious and immediate consequences, I do not beleive the F20C can handle this kind of (ab)use.
I would be very careful, anything over 9500rpm will most likely (based on the observations I have made in regards to a number of blown F20C's) cause serious problems that can and usually will lead to a catastrophic failure within a few thousand kilometers.
Suggestions if you drive HARD: (I do it every...)
Check/adjust valves at regular intervals (month)
Check the sparkplugs (two weeks)
Check the intake/filter (two weeks)
Change your oil regularily (2000km-2500km or 1200mi-1500mi)
- use a high quality engine oil (OE Honda, Mobil 1 Synthetic, etc...)
Replace the tranny fluid more often than the schedule recommends (10000km)
Touch your car, and tell her how sexy she is (every day)
If you notice something wrong i.e. unusual sounds, vibration, power loss, unusual handling, etc... GET YOUR RIDE CHECKED OUT! Don't wait - the car is pretty tuned from the factory and it's pushing the envelope already. Be smart and treat your ride with respect.
You get the idea.
Disclaimer: Don't listen to me or do what I say - I'm insane. Do whatever you want and be responsible for your actions.
Peace.
