Very late cars were tape-less. I have no idea what's under the tape on my car so it's staying on. Compliments the black roof. White frame on a white car with a white hardtop looks good though.

Apparently in early models the finish underneath wasn't the the best. On my 2000 there was one spot the size of a quarter that looked like it was sanded down. As soon as I removed the tape I regret it. On later years I've heard that the finish is better.

I would have normally voted to keep the tape on... but when I see them side by each (especially with the hardtop being white), my vote is to pull the black tape off.
