YES! I'm trying to figure out a way to buy a home in the next year. I already paid the $75 for 2 renewl registrations and 1 new DL. Just so that I could avoid getting rid of the illegal tint and emission testing. This will buy me at least another 6 months. Hopefully I can get the insurance transferred over without incident and will be 100% Texan by the end of the year. All this talk about it--probably get pulled over on my way home tonight.
Don't jinx yourself. Want to buy a house? Save 20 percent on a home and you'll be approved guaranteed! If not, do an fha loan.

Emission testing? You know that they just scan for CELs right? Only the older cars to the run and test. but the newer cars they just scan. I could be wrong, but I could have sworn that is that they did to mine last time.

I didn't change over to a TX license until AFTER I bought my S2000 here even. That was 9 months after I moved here. Cops really don't care... just say you are visiting.... no big deal.

As far as residency goes... Texas is retarded. They want you to change your license and registration, etc within 30 days, but still won't consider you a resident until after a year. In fact! When you go to change over your vehicle registration, they will charge you $90 per car you bring in from a different state as a "new resident fee" When my Integra was stolen, it still had NJ info on it.... when I rebuilt it, I had already purchased the S2000 a month ago and that was a TX car. They tried to charge me the $90 "new resident fee" for the integra. I said uhhh I have a TX license and already own a TX vehicle here, and have lived here for over a year.... they didn't care. The way I got around the fee was to gift the car to David.... $10 fee. Car is now legal here... but.... you know he still hasn't gifted the bar back to me... lol

Also... the TX system is f-ed up. First you have to change over your vehicle registration THEN you have to go get your license done... completely backwards from any other state.

If you don't plan on living here for a while... seriously don't bother switching over everything. It's a PAIN.

Thank you! I was close to starting the registration process but after reading your post. I'll keep my FL tag for another 6-12 months. I didn't know about the $90 fee for each car.
While I agree with Trish for the most part. You have to go to the slow dmv's and court house. It didn't take me long but I was in katy.
